Craftsman Contemporary Success Story

This unique home in Ocean Township is built for the owner with a contemporary taste. Its appearance grabs your attention and makes you keep looking. It was a difficult house to design and construct, but all the extra work was worth it. After all was said and done, the house received its just recognition in the August – September 2008 edition of “Design, New Jersey,” which features many of the most striking and elegant homes in the state.

This home required a variance because the lot did not conform to the township’s size requirements and there were numerous setback issues. Situations like this put most builders back on their heels, but here again, Massaro Construction answered the call. We know the maze that has to be traveled to reach the final goal, i.e., building approval, and we know what Zoning Boards and Planning Boards are looking for. In this case, we hired the attorney and the engineer/surveyor; we worked with the architects to prepare a variance package for the Township; we published the necessary legal notices; we submitted the detailed application and drawings for the owners; and we were there every step of the way to give testimony and get final construction approval. This is a complex process that often requires compromises with the Township, but in this case, we were successful in obtaining approval for everything we requested including the pool and pool house.

As with many lots near the New Jersey shore, this one sits on a high water table. That’s a problem many, probably most, builders can’t handle; it’s also one where Massaro Construction has developed great expertise over the years. Among other things, we had to excavate to a deeper level than normal, install extra drainage capacity, stabilize the foundation on a deep bed of gravel, and prevent seepage into the finished basement.

The home itself is a marvelous example of contemporary design. It is striking from the outside, and then more so from the inside. It has extensive stone work inside and out with slate flooring throughout the first floor. It includes an oversized kitchen and black window trim to accent its modern feel. The home looks out to the backyard, which includes an array of Pergola , a fountain pool, and a pool house to match the exterior of the main home. Overall, this home represents the best of contemporary appearance and has been cited for its unique design and craftsmanship.
